Welcome to Strood
Strood is a thriving town in Medway, formulary known as part of Frindsbury until 1193, now Frindsbury is considered part of Strood. It is a suburb of the City of Rochester and It is one of five tradition town centres in Medway and is identified as an important District Centre, providing bulk convenience food shopping and comparison shopping facilities and services.
Strood Riverside is part of an ambitious 20-year programme for the regeneration of the waterfront and is in line for a huge economic boost, as Medway council invest more than £1 billion, transforming it into a premier European city of learning, culture, tourism and enterprise. With continuing population growth and pressure from commuters, the ex industrial “brownfield” land is being used for new homes and businesses, and the project will see up to 16,000 homes and 40,000 jobs created.
The plan is heavily focused on ensuring that Strood becomes a healthy and vibrant centre that new residents and workers will use for day to day goods and services. Strood boasts plenty of shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes, while its business parks draw the crowds. Strood is an upcoming town with strengths in education, entertainment, professional services and transport all contributing to its prominence.
Medway Valley Leisure Park is located in Strood, some 31 miles south-east of Central London. It is situated on Chariot Way, less than one mile from Junction 2 of the M2 via Roman Way and Cuxton Road. There is 150,000 sq ft of commercial with tenants including Cineworld Cinema, Virgin Active, Gala Bingo, Frankie & Bennys, Hungry Horse, Chiquitos, McDonald's and 120 bed Premier Inn hotel.
Strood retail park offers a selection of stores, from Next, Matalan, Argos, Brantano, Carpet Right, KFC and a B&Q. It was announced that B&Q would be replaced with a gym, café and three new shops. Strood town centre has a great range of shops, including well-known high street names such as Tesco, Morrison, Asda, Boots, Wilkinson and Greggs. These leading brands sit alongside many family-owned businesses that give Strood a reputation for quality, value and friendly service. Shoppers can also enjoy the colourful and traditional market that operates in the town centre on Tuesday and Saturday, offering a wide range of quality goods, before taking a well-earned coffee or lunch-break in one of the many coffee shops or snack-bars.
Visit one of Medway’s hidden treasures, Temple Manor, once the home of the Knights Templar, who owned most of the farmland in the area and founded the Newark Hospital. Diggerland is also heaps of fun for the kids, or you could enjoy a more traditional family picnic at nearby Shorne Woods Country Park. There is a wide range of sports facilities including Strood leisure centres, and close proximity to ski and snowboard centre and golf courses.
The nearest league football team is Gillingham, who play in League 1, however there are numerous Premiership teams within easy reach in London, along with international rugby and cricket venues. Strood is excellent for commuter links, with the A2, M20 and M2 both being within close proximity. Trains from Strood station will whisk you to London in approx. 40 minutes, while London City Airport, 32 miles away, and Gatwick, just 38 miles away, provide easy access to Europe and the wider world.
Strood has a diverse range of peoples and cultures, and has estimated its population to be over 13,000 and ranks 11th out of Medway’s 22 Wards. Most households are traditional families with school age children. Most families are owner occupiers, but a number rent their houses from the local council.
Strood Academy is the only secondary school in Strood. For secondary education, many pupils from Strood attend schools in neighbouring towns.
